Blog Guidelines

1. Blog Guidelines

blogPurpose:

The purpose of the Blog in College 2.0 is for us to delve more deeply into course readings and to link course reading to current events.  A blog provides us with the opportunity for ongoing discussion of these issues outside of class and also lets us reflect on and comment on the thoughts of others.

This blog will help us to:

  • Make linkages between what we are reading in class and what is going on in higher education today.
  • Develop or test new ideas and arguments about education
  • Get feedback from others about our ideas in real time
  • Better understand current events related to educational issues
  • Consider the benefits and drawbacks of various approaches to education
  • Think more critically about what we are reading and how it influences our thinking.

How it works:

This blog provides a way to reflect on the course readings. Sometimes I will provide you with specific prompts related to the readings and ask you to respond.  Other times I may ask for your reactions to the piece and how it has influenced your thinking on the topic.  The course blog is located on the “blog” link from the course home page.

In your responses to the readings it will always be important to tie your ideas back to those presented in the reading.  This is meant to be an opportunity to enter into a discussion with the text so  quoting from our readings and/or providing references will be helpful in making the connection between your ideas and those of our authors.

Blog entries are “due” by midnight the day before the class period where they are listed in the syllabus.  This is a hard deadline.

Assessment:

Your grade on the blog is based primarily on the completion of blog posts. For this aspect of the course, you must submit a blog each week that an entry is expected.  You can’t make up blog posts after the due date. You get two points for completing a blog post.

If the quality of your work seems to be lacking, I will make deductions to the points awarded based on my judgement of the quality of the content and your effort.

Overall, the blog assignment combined with the annotation assignment below is worth 10% of your course grade.
